Translated by Fred Kramer and edited by Wilbert Rosin, The Congregation’s Right to Choose Its Pastor is an updated translation of C. F. W. Walther’s Das Gemeindewahlrecht, which was published serially in the newspaper Der Lutheraner from 1860–1861. Walther’s essay outlining the voting rights of the congregation in light of Luther’s doctrine of the universal priesthood is, in some regards, a sequel to his influential treatise Church and Ministry (Kirche und Amt). Considering issues regarding the nature of the church still abound today, this book continues to resonate in current debates about church structure. This edition includes a helpful discussion guide for individual or group study.
